Social Networking

With all the buzz about social networking these days many people are finding themselves lost. Technology is not just the future, it is the present, this is the way to run your business! Customers are looking in different places to find their connections. It used to be just the phone books now you have 5 or more phone books for each area, newspapers, local magazines, radio, t.v. and the all important, social media. Where do you begin, what can you afford and what is necessary?

Print ads can be very beneficial but are very expensive at the same time. Why not take advantage of FREE advertising? We not only have our Blogs, Facebook, Linked-in, Twitter and so on, have you tried starting with the obvious? Google your business name, what comes up? The more you are "out there" the more you will have listed but, have you "claimed" your business on all the other free domains? How about Yelp, Merchant Circle, City Search, Judy's book... each one of these sights come up when people are searching the Internet for your type of business. Not only will it help get your name out there, it will  boost your website credibility. Most of these sites will link to your personal web site there fore boost your site ratings and visibility. This only takes a few minuets and you will be surprised how much it will help. So, if you don't have hours a day to devote to your social media networking, take advantage of the free listings and if you can, pick one media that you understand and that works for you and stay devoted to it. Your friends and customer base will grow and they will learn to know you , like you and trust you. You don't have to be a computer expert to stay ahead of the game, you just have to be on top of the game!

I hope this has helped a few of you out there that just don't have the time or know how, it's baby steps. Just don't take on more than you can keep up with and don't let it control you. Remember, all things are good, in moderation.

Trisha,
I have been talking about this for last few years to many people and the importance of it. I was the 7th person to sign up with Merchant Circle via personal invite because of my history online and this is where I generally send people first who want to learn about blogging, newsle tters, and the basics of branding ones self and marketing online. You do get a nice "backlink" established from it and can get on page 1 of Google but starting your own self hosted blog is really the best way when trying to brand yourself and/or your business. Owning and operating your own blog becomes an asset to your business and you would be surprised if I told you what the value of mine is at this point. Using other sites are great for SEO purposes but you wont gain value for the time you invest in them. With your own blog you can sell ad space, banner ads, and many other streams of income. Some blogs are sold in the 6 and 7 figure range because of the web traffic that they generate.

I have taken to spending 30 minutes three evenings a week to review my web presence. Each time I discover a new angle to increase back links to my site or put my company out there. The broader the net you throw the more Google likes you.

This article was excellent Trisha. I even have to admit I learned something. Thank you for sharing about all of those free sites!
